Tamil films are very popular - as par with Hindi films. Tamil film industry is also called Kollywood, as this is based in Kodambakkam near Chennai. The popularity of the Tamil films can be attributed to the fact that a large Tamil speaking population is spread across the globe - in Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, besides India. Now Tamil films are popular in other countries too, like South Africa, Canada, USA, UK and surprising in Japan too after mega success.
Back in India, Tamil films are keenly watched in neighboring states like, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala. Simran dominated the Tamil film world until recently till 2003 along with other hot and popular heroines Kushboo, Meena, Roja, Rambha Jyothika etc.
